01About the conversion

Why convert MOV to WebM?

MOV is Apple's QuickTime container — what your iPhone, Mac screen recorder and Final Cut produce. It often holds large H.264 or ProRes tracks that are perfect on Apple hardware but oversized for a fast-loading web page.

WebM is the web's lightweight alternative: an open, royalty-free format built around the VP9 codec, which packs video smaller than H.264 at the same quality. For modern sites targeting Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Android, WebM means quicker loads and lower bandwidth.

MOV is also how motion designers hand over video with a transparent background — logos, lower thirds, stickers and UI animations exported from After Effects, Motion, Premiere or Final Cut as ProRes 4444, Animation (QuickTime RLE) or PNG; Final Cut Pro, Motion and Compressor can also hand it over as HEVC with alpha. TinyVid spots the alpha channel in any of these and keeps it. VP9 WebM carries the transparency in Chrome, Firefox and Edge; Safari plays WebM but drops its alpha, so TinyVid adds an HEVC file with alpha that Safari shows transparent on Mac and iPhone, iOS 15 included.

Converting MOV to WebM re-encodes the QuickTime stream to VP9 inside the WebM container and trims the size hard while keeping the picture clean. For a transparent clip the embed code lists the HEVC file first, with a type only Safari accepts, and the WebM second, so every browser picks its own file with no script. An opaque clip becomes a single WebM that plays in Chrome, Firefox, Edge, Android and Safari on Mac; for older iPhones, see the FAQ below.

02Step by step

How to convert MOV to WebM

  1. Drop your .mov file above or browse from disk — up to 200 MB free, no sign-up.
  2. The output is preset to VP9 WebM; pick a quality preset such as Standard player or Max compression.
  3. Optional: fine-tune quality and resolution in Advanced settings.
  4. Press Convert. If the MOV has a transparent background, TinyVid keeps it automatically and, unless you set a target size, adds an HEVC copy for Safari.
  5. Copy the embed code and paste it into your page; for a transparent clip it already lists both files in the right order.
03FAQ
01How do I convert MOV to WebM for free?
Upload the .mov above and press Convert — files up to 200 MB become WebM for free with no account; up to 4 GB is a one-time payment by size.
02Does TinyVid keep the transparent background of my MOV?
Yes. If the MOV carries an alpha channel — ProRes 4444, Animation (QuickTime RLE), PNG or HEVC with alpha — the background stays transparent whether you pick WebM or leave the default Auto: both make a VP9 WebM plus an HEVC copy for Safari. MP4 and GIF can't keep it: pick one of them and TinyVid warns you before converting; the result screen then offers to redo the same file as WebM at no extra cost. A target file size changes this: Auto then makes an MP4 (with the same warning), and WebM becomes a single file that Safari shows on a solid background — and if the transparency doesn't fit the target or the clip runs over 5 minutes, the background is solid everywhere.
03Will the transparent video work in Safari and on iPhone?
Yes, as long as you don't set a target file size. Safari plays VP9 WebM but ignores its alpha channel, so TinyVid also makes an HEVC file with alpha — the format Apple uses for transparent video. The embed code lists it first, typed video/mp4; codecs="hvc1" — Safari on Mac and iPhone (iOS 15 and later) takes it, while Chrome, Firefox and Edge skip it and play the WebM.
04Is WebM smaller than MOV or MP4?
Usually, yes. VP9 in WebM is more efficient than the H.264 or ProRes typically found in MOV, so you get a smaller file at similar quality — ideal for fast pages.
05Which browsers play WebM?
Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Android play VP9 WebM natively, and so does Safari on Mac. iPhones play it from iOS 17.4; on older iPhones a transparent clip still works through its HEVC copy, while for an opaque clip choose Auto — TinyVid then makes an MP4 that plays everywhere.
06Should I choose WebM or MP4 for my site?
Pick WebM for the smallest files on modern browsers, or whenever you need a transparent background. Pick MP4 for the broadest compatibility: with Auto, TinyVid makes a compact AV1 file plus an H.264 MP4 fallback and lists both in the embed code. For a transparent clip without a target size, Auto makes WebM plus HEVC instead, so the background stays transparent.
07My MOV is HEVC with alpha — will that work?
Yes. HEVC with alpha — the format Final Cut Pro, Motion and Compressor export for transparent video — keeps its transparent background in TinyVid: with the default Auto or with WebM you get a VP9 WebM for Chrome, Firefox and Edge plus an HEVC copy with alpha for Safari, as long as you don't set a target size. With a target size, Auto makes an MP4 instead, which can't keep transparency, and TinyVid warns you before converting.
08Does converting MOV to WebM lose quality?
Re-encoding is lossy, but VP9 preserves detail well at small sizes. Raise the Quality slider in Advanced settings if you want to keep more.
09Do I need an app to convert MOV to WebM?
No — it runs online, with no software to install and no login for free or one-time conversions.
